Barbaric Yawp Miss Beanie again, as I pulled in help to try to get a good shot of her for my friends. This shot has two slaved SB600s with umbrellas, the onboard D200 flash, and a backlight. Technically, should be a breeze, right? WRONG. See, thing is, when dealing with a high-energy feline in a 6-foot custom cat tree, all bets are off. What I didn't factor in was Beans' cooperation (not bad, for a cat that just wanted to play, honestly) and the results of leaving my D200 in the car overnight by accident - weird fog refraction in the lens. Still making newb mistakes 3 years later!...

Look at what?s in store for SCIENCE! HEY EVERYONE HAVE YOU SEEN THIS: Yeah, so, that’s a Cherpumple.  I’m going to make one!  Maybe later this week or sometime next week!  And obviously this process will be live-blogged, because I haven’t done any cardiac-inducing science experiments for the internet for a while.  So you have that to look forward to.  Awesome, right?  If I had my druthers it would be dessert following a main course of a giant boiled ostrich egg, sliced like a ham.  Sadly, though, I do not always have my druthers, nor do I have an ostrich egg because they were charging $40 for them at the...

early morning thoughts here are some point form thoughts while I write my poetry paper. I haven't taken the time to arrange them in any particular order; at least, I don't plan to.- I have a toque on because my heater conked out two weeks ago and when I got me money back without my hassle it never occurred to me that it would be cold for another two months.- I can't, for the life of me, make a good cup of coffee.- my roommates love to celebrate a goal by tapping the same spot on the the floor in the living room/ceiling of my room with their foot and all their weight.- I think I was possessed when I wrote the last pa...

A Running Commentary
Life is Good I am unemployed.I am living in my parents' basement.I have not had sex in... too long. And I am ridiculously happy. Do I wish I had a job? Yes, I do. Do I wish I lived on my own? You have no idea how much, Internet. Yet, I am filled with this inexplicable euphoria and general sense of well-being. Where did it come from? I do not know, but I hope that it is here to stay. I may owe various financial institutions upwards of $10,000 and not know how I am going to make my next car payment, but I am surprisingly care free. I have done many things in the last several months, Internet. I went to Flori...

Sharing Today I found myself questioning the wisdom of having such a large amount of data about myself online. I vacillate between thinking it is a wonderful thing and that there is no real harm in it, and thinking that I should be more circumspect. I have been feeling down lately, and I think it is during these times I want to pull inward, withdraw all my feelers, and make myself invisible… Someone who has 15k photos on flickr can’t really do that. (However, should the federal government or the FBI ever need build a psychological profile on me, they will have ample pre-existing material...

It Gets Better So I decided to give a mini lecture on the connections between Lord of the Flies and Freud's theory of the id, ego and superego. And I wrote this on the board: "Sigmund Freud and L.O.T.F."Then a boy raised his hand and asked "So, that's the lion tamer guy right?"I'll let you all think that through. It took me a minute, or two. ...

small potatoes
world cup of ufc Indoor soccer is so funny. Mainly because it bears no resemblance to actual soccer, and yet people still play it. I guess I was coddled and precious growing up in KW, where we never played soccer in a gym (except for that one season where we had a personal trainer and played crab soccer, and I don't even want to think about that) because we always had Bechtel Park and Budd Park, and now RIM park, and generally, all of the indoor fields we could ever use, and we always got first access to them because we were (cough) rep teams. So the fact that I am playing soccer in a gym now is pretty funny. ...

Staring on the Edge of Safe
Number 1 of ?09 I am a dumb, and somehow when I did my top albums/songs of ‘09 post, I forgot to include my very favourite track of the year. But that’s ok, because now it gets a special post all its own. And it deserves it, because it is by far the best jam of the year. It is “A New Error” by Moderat. ...

Somebody To Love
Doodle The Mascot I joined the local embroidery guild a couple weeks ago, and for their first project of the year they are doing redwork embroidery. Basically you take a stylized image, transfer it to your fabric, and use outline stitch (also called stem stitch) to stitch the outline onto the fabric. It’s redwork because you traditionally use [...]...
