Unexpected
November 16, 2004

I heard of their breakup through their blogs. Shirley wrote about heartache; Jason said it was over. There was crying and anger and I felt like shit but couldn’t say anything. But today, when I saw Jason again, he was smiling and seemed fantastically happy.
“I got engaged,” he said.
“To whom?” I was bewildered.
“To Dr. Roseheart,” he said.
He teased me a while before telling me wonderful and impossible things. The day before he proposed to Shirley and gave her the ring that once belonged on his keychain. She accepted — they’re getting married. And I didn’t see any of this coming.
I kept smiling like an idiot for a while, happy that they’ve resolved their issues in the most outrageous way possible. I’m looking forward to the wedding. They should serve marshmallows instead of cake.
Update: Jason tells all — so much sweetness is hard to endure :).
